Torch Laos
Lao Coffee, Long Overdue

Lao coffee has been excellent. The world is only starting to notice. This November, our Vientiane cafe, roastery, and academy open their doors. Come see for yourself.

“It Kept Surprising Us”

Founders Paul and Summer Orr enjoying green coffee in a Laos coffee field.

Laos sits just south of our home in Yunnan, and its coffee kept surprising us.

Around 2015, our founder Marty tasted a honey-processed Lao robusta that overturned everything he believed robusta could be. Years later, our Torch Laos partners Paul and Summer Orr, training with us in Pu'er, ordered a Lao pour-over they'd never tried. It was one of the best cups they'd ever had.

Both times, we were left wondering: why did we know so little about coffee this good? And what else were we missing?

In 2025, Paul and Summer moved to Vientiane to find out. What they found is that Lao coffee doesn't need to be made better. Farmers carry knowledge passed down for generations. What Lao coffee hasn't had is a stage.

So this November, we're opening a cafe, roastery, and academy in Vientiane, building excitement for Lao specialty coffee in Laos first, then sharing it with the world. Our Lao team will brew and lead daily cuppings, and in time, we'll offer classes to growers, producers and cafe owners.

It's time to celebrate Lao coffee at its origin.
